Presenter and Co-presenter Fees:
Primary presenter is no charge and Co-presenter is $75.
A presentation may have up to 4 presenters with each additional presenter (after 2 presenters) paying the regular conference fee of $165.

Cancellation Fee: 
A Cancellation Fee of $75 will be applied for any cancellations on or after February 27, 2023. Note that if an attendee who cancels after February 27, 2020 substitutes with another colleague then a cancellation fee will not be charged.

SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

Patrick Tutwiler, Ph.D., Secretary of Education

MassCUE is excited to announce that Patrick Tutwiler will give a welcome address at our Spring Leadership Conference on March 1st.

As Massachusetts Secretary of Education, Patrick Tutwiler directs the Executive Office of Education, which oversees early education, K-12, and higher education. Secretary Tutwiler sits on each of the boards governing the Commonwealth’s education agencies, as well as the University of Massachusetts system. He is Governor Maura Healey’s top advisor on education and helps shape the Commonwealth’s education agenda.

Before being sworn in as Secretary, Dr. Tutwiler served as the senior program officer at the Boston-based Barr Foundation, a grantmaking organization focused on arts, climate and education. Prior to that, Secretary Tutwiler was superintendent of the Lynn Public Schools and headmaster at Boston Public Schools. As superintendent of Lynn Public Schools, he spearheaded a collaborative, equity-centered effort that translated into higher graduation rates and a more racially diverse staff while also overseeing the creation of the Commonwealth’s second largest early college program.

MORNING KEYNOTE

Dr. Kandice Sumner

Kandice Sumner Ph.D., has been a successful urban and suburban public school teacher, leader and administrator for fifteen years. While born and raised in urban Boston she graduated from a suburban school system via the METCO program (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity); the longest running voluntary desegregation program in America. Kandice graduated from Spelman College (an HBCU) Phi Beta Kappa with departmental honors.

As the feature of the documentary film “Far From Home”, and author of the TedTalk "How America's Public Schools Keep Kids in Poverty" she is a sought after educational consultant and keynote speaker facilitating difficult conversations about race, education, gender and equity.

Kandice is the sole facilitator for the RACE (Race Achievement Culture and Equity) professional development series and has been a mentor in various youth programs throughout the Greater Boston Area. Kandice's doctoral research was a Critical Black Feminist Autobiography that examined the lived experience of a participant in METCO and calls for further work to be done in the socio-emotional, mental and racial identity development of Black individuals matriculating predominantly white institutions. Going from being one of a few Blacks in her school to learning at a historically Black college to teaching and leading in underserved and predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods of Boston, Kandice has spent a lifetime traversing the intersecting lines of race, class and gender. Kandice is the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the non-profit Educators for AntiRacism, is currently Associate Principal of Culturally Responsive Practice at New Heights Charter School Brockton and is an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Kristina Ishmael
Deputy Director of Office of Educational Technology

Kristina Ishmael is an educator, learner, advocate, and agent of change. As the leader of the Office of Ed Tech, Ishmael executes the office mission of developing national edtech policy that enables everywhere, all-the-time learning and supports digital equity and opportunity.

Ishmael most recently worked as an educational consultant and Sr. Research Fellow at New America working at the intersection of open education, digital equity, and culturally responsive and sustaining education. She previously worked in OET leading the #GoOpen initiative, as well as serving the state of Nebraska as the Digital Learning Specialist. Ishmael started her education career as an early childhood and elementary teacher to emerging bilingual learners in Omaha, Nebraska.

Each spring, MassCUE and MASCD award Administrator Scholarships to first time attendees to the Spring Leadership Conference at Holy Cross in Worcester. This admission includes the recipient, PLUS a building-based buddy administrator from the same district, who is also a first time attendee. Applicants must be a MassCUE or MASCD member but the buddy who accompanies the winner does not need to be a member. Two buddy scholarships will be awarded with one elementary and one secondary winner to be selected randomly from the entire pool of applicants.

Please complete the application by January 31st, so we can complete registration as soon as possible.

Equity: What’s Next?

It seems we've all had phase 1 of "DEI training," but equity is a process! We want to hear from you, what is next in our journey towards equity? We see you and know that many of you have been leading the way for change. Please share the work you are doing in your district, school, or in your classroom that could be considered related to these primary areas:

• Community and School Culture
  Proposals in this strand should focus on building school community and culture in order to positively impact experiences for students and staff. These sessions should deepen knowledge for school/classroom leaders to feel empowered in guiding community-based action steps.

• Capacity Building for Access and Equity with EdTech
  Proposals in this strand should focus on education technology tools that can increase equity and/or access for students. These sessions should showcase specific tools and/or strategies that school/classroom leaders can use.
  

• Youth Empowerment
  Proposals in this strand should focus on how to embrace student voice in the school/classroom environment. These sessions should provide specific examples so that school/classroom leaders feel empowered to bring youth into decision making spaces.

• Joy and Justice
  Proposals in this strand should focus on embracing joy as a tool to inform school policies. These sessions should include examples of how opportunities for joy expanded results for justice.

Submit your proposal to present at the Spring Leadership Conference, 2023 no later than January 23, 2023 at 9:00 am.

Expected Demographics

The conference is made up of a cross section of education professionals from across the Commonwealth. There is a small population that attends from surrounding states. The attendance will close at 250 maximum. Expected attendees include Administration (Superintendents, Curriculum Directors, Dean of Students, Principals and Technology Directors), Educators (Integration Specialists, Classroom Teachers, Content Coordinators, etc.) and IT Directors.
