This course will focus on using a combination of primarily G Suite for Education (Google) tools to create scavenger hunt-like puzzles that can be combined to create a digital escape room. Apps that are utilized in this course include Google Docs, Sheets, Drawings, and Sites. Puzzles include jigsaw puzzles, hidden links within a Google Drawing, and secret word/message decoders.

Erin Foley
Erin Foley is the Digital Literacy Specialist at Hanover Middle School in Hanover, MA, and is a Google for Education Certified Trainer. She has 12 years of experience as a classroom teacher with 9 of those years specifically in the field of instructional technology. Erin is a member of the Hanover Public Schools Technology Committee and believes that technology is a powerful tool in transforming the learning environment to meet the academic needs and interests of students. Erin has presented at conferences including the MassCUE 2018 Fall Conference and the MassCUE Datapalooza 2019. She was also named as a PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovator in 2016.
Module 1: Participants will be introduced to the idea of a digital escape room. They will then learn how to use Google Drawings to create puzzles for students. These puzzles will include using text tools to embed a secret message, creating multiple layers, transparent shapes, and hidden links in Google Drawings, and using various color filling techniques for text and shapes to embed hidden content in a Google Drawing.
Module 2: Participants will learn how to use Google Docs and Google Sheets to create puzzles for students. These puzzles will include using additional text tools to embed a secret message, conditional formatting, and filtering tools within a spreadsheet to hide a secret message.
Module 3: Participants will learn how to use additional tools, such as Jigsawplanet.com and Google Forms to create additional puzzle tools to incorporate into a digital escape room. Participants will learn how to use Google Form quiz tools and response validation to create a digital scavenger hunt for students.
Module 4: Participants will learn how to build a Google Site that embeds various file formats, such as Google Forms and Google Drawings. They will learn how to add multiple editors and share sites with specific groups of students.
Project Description: Participants who wish to complete for credit option will complete a digital escape room that incorporates all of the above tools.
