MassCUE is pleased to announce Dr. Cathy Collins as our Featured Educator for October, 2021! Currently a technology teacher at Sharon Middle School and with 15+ years prior experience as library media specialist at a wide range of public, private and international schools, Cathy’s educational journey is one of growth both personally, as well as for those whose lives she’s touched. Dr. Collins is passionate about STEM/STEAM, Media Literacy and Global Education. As a regular contributor to MassCUE’s Get A CUE Podcast, she shares ideas to integrate these concepts in the classroom. She engages her students with innovative projects to promote their interest in the STEAM-related world, as well as their digital literacy skills. One of her many passions is to ensure her students have the skills to navigate our complex world of digital information. Now more than ever, information literacy is at the forefront of this effort in today’s world, and Cathy is up to the task! She believes that ensuring that her students understand the importance of fact-checking and credibility of information is an integral component to their education.
Cathy has contributed her expertise for the News Literacy Project, a national education nonprofit organization dedicated to sound discernment in the consumption of information, and participation in a democratic society. This aligns with Dr. Collins’ focus on the relevance of current events and connections to student learning in this complex age of digital information.
As a co-presenter in the edWebinar, “Empowering Students with News Literacy.” Cathy shares her expertise and the need for integrating media literacy with project-based learning and a culturally relevant pedagogy. She is co-author of “Teaching Literacy in the Digital Age: Inspiration for All Levels and Literacies”, which contains activities to integrate digital literacy for any classroom. Cathy is also offering the Empowering Students with News Literacy workshop through MassCUE this fall. This offering is available to both members and non-members of MassCUE. Dr. Cathy Collins is currently working as a Technology Teacher (Specialist) at Sharon Middle School. She holds a Doctorate in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Leadership, Teaching and Learning; and additional Masters Degrees in Education and Library Science. Dr. Collins served on the MassCUE Board as PD Chair from 2015-2019, and has published her writing in various journals including “EdWeek,” “Library Media Connection,” “NEA Today,” and “Knowledge Quest.” She served on the MA State Science Ambassador Team, ISTE STEM PLN Leadership Team and Mass School Library Media Association as Advocacy Chair. She was elected this November, 2020, to serve a three year term on the ISTE Board of Directors.She was also selected for a three year term as a News Literacy Project Ambassador. She is passionate about STEM/STEAM, Media Literacy and Global Education.
